Dallas Chair

Monday, October 30th, 2006

We were just in Dallas for a wedding (congrats Matt & Michelle!) and had a chance to drop by a vintage/modern furniture store called Century Modern. They have great selections and we had pored over their website quite a bit in the past. In person, they did not disappoint. They were also in an interesting area of Dallas, Deep Ellum, which has an industrial and blues/jazz history from the ’20s and ’30s.

We bought one of these chairs for my future office. My inspiration is Lady Bird Johnson’s office at the LBJ Library here in Austin.

My ugly rug

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

… will be ugly no more! Yay!

I bought these FLOR tiles, Heartfelt in “Coeur” which is like a light gray. This was about a year ago and the moment I opened the box I knew I’d made a mistake. A big one.

After living with it for a solid year and hearing Scott say “I never liked that color” countless times I finally realized, the answer to the ugly FLOR tile problem was simple. More FLOR tiles! I placed the order for FLOR additives today and soon we shall be freed from the boring and ugly sight of this:

Grading

They are leveling off the ground, readying it for concrete slabs, piers and retaining walls. It’s pretty impressive what can be accomplished in one day, really transforming the feel of the lot.

Scott and I have been going back and forth about the concrete slab finish. We can leave it with the standard finish (smoothed with a steel trowel and sealed) or we can add special aggregate (small rocks) and diamond polish off a thin layer at the top, leaving a super shiny, durable and pretty finish. Of course this comes at a price. Here are examples of the two options – standard finish on top, polished below.

We are leaning toward the polished finish. It looks alot like terrazzo but also has a distinctive look its own.

“Obsolete Inc”

This company in Los Angeles has the coolest industrial and vintage objects and lighting. For instance, these chairs — I would have loved to get them for my dining table!

And these leather slung chairs – great.

and finally, I am seriously thinking about this light for the house.
